Field training day on the FWS

The field training of the full-time and part-time Master of International Water Policy and Water Diplomacy was held at the Woldemár Lászlóffy Hydrometric Measurement Station of the Faculty of Water Sciences in Magyaregregy, Hungary, between 9-11 October. The field training was conducted in English and was attended by 18 students. The students gained insights into the measurement of the elements of the hydrological cycle, the methodology of data collection and processing, and the spatial and temporal distribution of waters in the catchment by quantifying the water resources in the catchment. In line with the aim of the field training, the students gained a technical and hydrological practical background for their future work in conflict management and water management problem solving.

The students of the International Water Policy and Water Diplomacy MA program summarised their experiences during the very intensive 3 days in the following lines:

“During the three days, we put theory into practice. After studying the theory, we experienced how complicated it is to make accurate measurements and turn the numbers into meaningful results. While the field trip was intense, and we spent hours calculating and discussing methods, it was a great way to see why what we do here is relevant. Aside from learning new skills, we used the opportunity to get to know each other by having picnics outside in the sun between measurements and helping each other understand calculations over tea. We got an introduction to the equipment on the first day and practiced how to carry out the measurements. The second day we went on a hike along a creek where we took measurements whenever possible and relevant. It required a lot of teamwork, and we learned interesting facts about the area. On the last day, we finished up our calculations and reports.”
