Media Affairs, Natural Law, Digital World – these are the courses offered by the Ordered Liberty Summer School, which is realized through the collaboration between the Ordered Liberty Program at the University of Louisville in the United States and the Ludovika University of Public Service. The two-week summer school takes place at the Ludovika Campus, where students can attend in-person lectures while following online for remote participation.
As part of the summer school, participants could enroll in courses such as Media Law and Freedom of Speech; Natural Law and Natural Rights; Regulatory Efforts of Artificial Intelligence in the European Union; and Regulation of New Media Platforms. The course focusing on media regulation aims to explore different areas of law and the rights and freedoms affected by the changing media landscape. On the other hand, the natural law course mainly analyzes debates about the nature of law and its relationship with moral principles, social facts, and political institutions. In these two courses, students' performance is evaluated based on tests. The courses addressing the challenges of the digital world center around understanding the evolving platforms and regulations essential in the age of artificial intelligence. The lecturers of the summer school include renowned Hungarian and American legal scholars who also strengthen the teaching staff of the participating universities due to their research in their respective fields. Thus, along with András Koltay, media law expert and pro-rector of the Ludovika University of Public Service, Luke M. Milligan and Russell L. Weaver, legal professors from the University of Louisville, as well as Zsolt Ződi, associate professor, and Balázs Bartóki-Gönczy, lecturer from the Ludovika University of Public Service, are among the lecturers and course coordinators.
Every summer, legal professors from the United States and Hungary gather in Budapest to offer courses around the concept of "ordered liberty." According to the concept of ordered liberty, a good society does not depend on utopian human constructions but rather on the measurable consideration of three values: justice, order, and freedom. Political communities worldwide face challenges posed by new forms of technology and communication. The Ordered Liberty Summer School helps students assess the proper balance of justice, order, and freedom in their own nations.
