Kahramanmaras earthquake directly from the research coordinator of the Turkish Red Crescent Academy

Between the 27th and 31st of March 2023, Dr Selman Salim KESGIN, research coordinator of the Turkish Red Crescent Academy, lecturer at the Ankara University of Social Sciences, visited the University of Public Service and its Disaster Management Institute within the framework of the Ludovika Scholars Program.

The guest lecturer, arriving from Turkey held a public lecture entitled “Earthquake in Turkey, the impacts and experiences” at the Miklós Zrínyi University Campus for specialized firefighters and candidates for military officers who joined thanks to the interesting topic of the lecture. In his presentation, Dr Selman Salim Kesgin demonstrated the danger level characteristics of Turkey, in framework of what he explained in details the country's vulnerability to earthquakes and other disasters. He introduced the extent of the destruction caused by the Kahramanmaras earthquake, the magnitude of the damage, the humanitarian aid that extends across the country's borders and the population protection measures. In his presentation, he highlighted the devoted assistance of the professional heavy search and rescue organization called HUNOR, whose work he repeatedly thanked. After the presentation, Dr Kesgin gave the students of the Institute for Disaster Management the opportunity to ask questions in the form of a direct consultation.

Dr Kesgin had a working meeting with the instructors of the Institute for Disaster Management on the theme of comparison of Turkish and Hungarian practical disaster prevention activities regarding the tasks carried out in connection with the very severe earthquake that occurred in Turkey recently. Future cooperation opportunities in the field of education and scientific research were explored as well. At the events, the entire firefighting officer candidate students and teaching staff of the Institute acquired knowledge that can be directly utilized in the field of education and scientific research in the future.
