Relations between the V4 and Brazil

The volume "The Visegrád Countries and Brazil", edited by Gyula Nagy Sándor, published by Ludovika University Press, was presented by the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy on 5 October 2021. The event was opened by Orsolya Pacsay-Tomassich, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Secretery of State responsible for the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy and the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme. After the opening speech, the authors gave an insight into the content of the book's chapters, with a brief presentation of the relations between the V4 countries and Brazil.

 

Maurício da Costa Carvalho Bernardes (Diplomat, Head of the Department for Relations with Central and Eastern Europe of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017) underlined that relations with the V4 countries are increasingly important for Brazil. Martin Hrabálek (Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies, Mendel University, Brno); Gyula Nagy Sándor Nagy (Associate Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, Senior Technical Advisor at the Hungarian Academy of Diplomacy) and Bartłomiej Znojek (Latin America Analyst at the Polish Institute of International Relations (PISM)) spoke about the details of cooperation between the two sides, highlighting among other things the excellent scientific and educational links, urging the removal of trade barriers between MERCOSUR and the European Union, and the importance of defence and political cooperation.

 

The moderator of the event was Judit Ricz (Research Fellow at the Institute of World Economy, Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, ELKH, Associate Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest).

 

The closing speech of the event was delivered by José Luiz Machado e Costa, Brazilian Ambassador to Budapest, who acknowledged the work of the authors and presented the Officer's Cross of the Order of Rio Branco to Gyula Sándor Nagy, who was awarded the distinction by the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil for his outstanding contribution to Brazilian-Hungarian relations.
