Victims of Communism Remembered

February 25 is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Dictatorships in Hungary. This year, due to the pandemic, online commemorations and programs are being held across the country.

Communism claimed some 100 million lives worldwide, and in Central and Eastern Europe, the death toll from famine, forced labour camps, or executions reached 1 million. February 25 is the anniversary of the day on which Béla Kovács, the general secretary of the Independent Smallholders' Party (FKgP), was abducted by the Soviets in 1947. All this has become a symbol of the disregard for democracy and freedom that has characterized decades of communism. In Hungary, the victims of communism were first commemorated on February 25, 2001 in the Parliament and in secondary schools, and since then commemorations are held every year. This year, commemorations take place at conferences, by short films and posters broadcast on the Internet. On the Facebook page and YouTube channel of the House of Terror Museum, short portrait films about the known and lesser-known victims and heroes of the fight against communism in Hungary can be seen.
