LUDOVIKA UNIVERSITY OF PUBLIC SERVICE

Department of Water Supply and Sewerage

The Department of Water Supply and Sewerage takes part in the education of Civil Engineers who specialize in water supply and drainage, and Environmental Engineers who specialize in water and wastewater treatment. In addition, water supply and drainage postgraduate course is coordinated by the Department, and was established by the rapid and continuous development of the water treatment technology. The course puts emphasis on merging the state-of-the-art water and wastewater technology innovations to its curriculum.

Besides the education and innovative research work in the territory of water and wastewater treatment, water supply and drainage, we are also involved in environmental protection such as waste management, environmental monitoring and analytics, air-, soil- and water-quality protection.

Water technology and the hydro-ecological measuring camps are the most popular among all of our measuring camps. Here the students learn about the operation of water treatment technologies, the analysis and particulars of water quality. Competencies acquired during the camps are very valuable to employers in the water management sector.

These recent developments have led to new research opportunities. In 2012, together with the University of Novi Sad, our Institute won a major EU IPA project to develop new technology for the reduction and elimination of ammonium and arsenic levels in waters (556 thousand euro). As a result of the programme a new platform for joint research and valuable knowledge transfer was developed.

Our Institute’s research focuses on water and waste water treatment as well as the quality of surface waters.

Water Technology Centre

The Water Technology Plant was built in 1983, with the purpose of providing quality education and research opportunity (qualification, monitoring, operation, development) on drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment and education in connection with the state of surface water. Its successor is the Water Technology Centre (WTC), which was established from the support of the Higher Education Restructuring Fund in 2015.

Within its walls, efficient tutor-research work has been ongoing for decades, with introducing novel investigational and educational methods in reply for the challenges. As a result, for today a practice-oriented facility with unique instruments is established which is exceptional also internationally.

Our main task is to ensure a practice-oriented basis for engineering courses that is open for other national or international institutions, undergraduate students, PhD students, lecturers and researchers.

Water Technology Centre provides the infrastructure for the educational and research purposes of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage. The examination of different types of water and soil samples takes place in a modern laboratory. Besides the laboratories and lecturer rooms, WTC Pilot Plant is unique throughout the country: students have the chance to examine the operation and treatment efficiency of drinking- and wastewater treatment technologies, which gives them practical experience.

With the connection to the municipal drainage system, a municipal and industrial wastewater treating system with low energy demand became possible. The system applies modular aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic reactors. Besides these reactors an MBR system could be also tested.
