The Department of China Studies (formerly: Chinese Public Administration, Economy and Society Research Center) was established in 2007 and it has been part of the University of Public Service since its foundation in 2012. The main goal of the Department is to provide current and future public servants of Hungary and other groups and individuals of the Hungarian society working in Hungary-China relations with accurate, up-to-date and practical knowledge of China.
The Department of China Studies is a unique institution in Hungary that undertakes the mission of education and research of China studies, with special focus on the needs of the Hungarian public sector (diplomacy, public administration, law enforcement, military) and the Hungarian economy.
The People’s Republic of China provides several opportunities and poses many challenges for the Hungarian society, especially for those groups and individuals who work in the field of Hungary-China relations, including the leaders and officers of the Hungarian public sector or the managers and employees of the Hungarian firms, involved in the Hungarian-Chinese economic relations. It is, therefore, a national interest to provide these groups and individuals with accurate, up-to-date and practical information, knowledge and data about China
The Department of China Studies provides courses on China's international relations, economy, public administration and society at BA, MA and PhD levels. Furthermore, it offers Chinese language courses that fit into a comprehensive Chinese Language Programme, ensuring that students of the University of Public Service have the opportunity to reach a high level of Chinese language skills. Every academic year 20-25 participants of the Chinese Language Program study in the People’s Republic of China for two semesters within the framework of various Hungarian and Chinese government scholarship programmes. In 2018 the Department’s student won the first prize on the National Chinese Language Competition in Hungary.
The Department of China Studies conducts plenty of academic research focusing on the fields of international relations, economy, public administration and society of China. In its research projects, the Department lays extra emphasis on delivering applicable results for the academic community as well as providing people working in various fields of public service with crucial information and knowledge.
The Department of China Studies has an extensive network of Hungarian and international researchers in the fields of modern China studies and traditional sinology as well. To provide an example, the Ludovika Research Group of China Studies, affiliated to the Department, consists of well-known experts of China studies.
