Department of Customs and Finance Guard
The Department of Customs and Finance Guard was established in 1991 as an organisational unit of the Police College, the legal predecessor of the Faculty of Law Enforcement. From the outset, the lecturers of the department have been specialists with many years of practical experience, initially belonging to the staff of the Customs and Finance Guard and, from 2010, to its successor, the National Tax and Customs Office (NTCA). The department trains finance guard officers for the NTCA, while its lecturers also participate in teaching tax administration within the undergraduate public administration programme. The department is likewise involved in delivering the master’s programme; students who complete the two‑year course obtain a degree in law enforcement. The effectiveness of the training is demonstrated by the consistently positive feedback we receive about our former students year after year. Recognition comes not only from the profession: our students also enjoy considerable recognition within the university. Each year, five to six prospective finance officers present the results of their research, and many of them achieve success at the National Scientific Student Conference.
The lecturers of the department conduct extensive scientific research. Their work focuses on the activities of revenue authorities. The resulting publications cover, among other areas, customs and tax law, risk management, law enforcement human resources and communication, the history of revenue authorities, as well as current training structures and international cooperation.
In 2019, the European Commission’s Directorate‑General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD) granted recognition to the four‑year Customs and Finance Bachelor’s programme at the Faculty of Law Enforcement for meeting the highest quality standards in modern customs education. This prestigious recognition was renewed in 2024, reaffirming the programme’s role as a cornerstone of European higher education in customs and finance.
