Department of Criminal Psychology

The subject criminal psychology has been taught since the establishment of the Police College, the legal predecessor of the Faculty of Law Enforcement by such illustrious and renowned experts as Péter Popper. The very first organisational unit to specialise in teaching criminal psychology was established in 2015 with the name Faculty of Criminal Psychology within the Institute of Behavioural Sciences and Law Enforcement. Educational activities soon commenced with Judit Hegedűs, PhD heading the Institute and Mihály Fogarasi, PhD heading the Faculty as the Acting Head. Dr. József Haller was appointed the Head of the Institute in January 2016, then later in the summer of 2016, he was also appointed as the Head of the Faculty. The Institute ceased its activities in 2019, and the Faculty of Criminal Psychology has been operating as an independent educational unit ever since. The educational profile of the Institute extends to several areas from imparting general knowledge on psychology through knowledge of criminal psychology to criminal psychiatry analyses of criminal cases.

As of the year 2019, the Criminal Psychology Workshop commenced its activities at the faculty with four research assistants under the direction of the head of the faculty. The objective of the workshop is to conduct independent and genuine research activities in the field of criminal psychology with particular attention to criminal profiling and standardisation.

Head of Department of Criminal Psychology

The Head of the Faculty is Dr. József Haller, professor, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He has been lecturing at various universities (ELTE, SOTE, SZIE, Pázmány) since 1994, and has been the head of the faculty of the Faculty of Criminal Psychology since 2016. His research areas include as follows: aggression, illicit drug use (cannabinoids), anxiety disorder, as well as the behavioural and neurobiological aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
